As of September 17, 2019, 530 confirmed or probable cases of lung illness associated with the use of e-cigarette products have been reported to CDC from 38 states and one territory. Seven deaths have been confirmed in California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, and Oregon. No cases have been reported in Alaska. DHSS has created a new webpage with information on the outbreak for providers and the public and with links to the most current CDC information and other resources. The CDC is advising people to consider not using e-cigarettes while this investigation is ongoing.
Health care providers should report cases of respiratory illness of unclear etiology among persons with a history of e-cigarette product use within the past 90 days to the Alaska Section of Epidemiology at (907) 269-8000 or 800-478-0084 (after hours).
Patients who experience symptoms like those reported in this outbreak should seek medical care promptly. Patients can also call Alaska’s poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
