Earthquake waiver extended deadline for Medicaid Part D enrollment

After the earthquake, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services granted two special enrollment periods – an extra window to apply for health insurance via the federal exchange and an extended Medicare Part D enrollment for Alaskans affected by the earthquake. CMS also enacted several waivers to help providers continue to provide health care. CMS was able to issue these waivers and enrollment extensions because the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency following President Trump’s emergency declaration for Alaska.
